There are a handful of tutorials on the net on how to migrate a Wordpress blog to a new domain. There seems to be many different ways to accomplish this migration. As I complete this switch from the old subdomain to its own domain I will walk you through the steps to move a blog to a new domain.

Unfortunately still it is not easy to understand and to do for many of readers who doesn’t familiar with HTML Codes, CSS, nor Javascripts etc. I wonder why Blogger Team do not give us any feature to add a Read More on Blogger easily like other blogging softwares do?

Ironically just today I read a post on the official Blogger In Draft blog about how to report HTML bugs on their New Post Editor. What makes Ironic? on that post, Pete the Blogger In Draft Author took an error while doing a Read More Hack on the New Post Editor as an example.

It will avoid Duplicate Content on Google, our favorite search engine
It will make our blogs load faster. Because instead of hiding the rest of the post with CSS, It will hide it from the server side.
That means Blogger Server will work faster also. Even I know you probably have the best server on the planet but if we can reduce the loads, why not isn’t it?
And because it has smaller size, that will make our readers happy too. Not all of our readers have a fast internet connection.

Basically, The Great Blog Off is going to be a 24-hour blog-a-thon on the 20th of January 2008. There are a number of participating blogs, bloggers and guest bloggers. JMMO, unfortunately, is unable to participate in the blog-off. But, I’m definitely helping in others ways. I have received many congrats email, most of them are amazed by the volume and scale, the prizes that have been gathered and how i did it in a matter of less than 2 days to reach over 30 supportive sponsors who agreed to give something without anything in return. Why would anyone want to sponsors his/her products for free in your contest and do not want anything in return? There are many reasons why a sponsor decline any returns from you because he believes in giving and gaining more returns from other potential clients who visits your blog to try and win prizes he wish to have. A sponsor receives more than just publicity on the blog/website but also ’selling’ his products he own.

It isn’t intuitive how to spell it from hearing it, it isn’t intuitive what it means from hearing it, it’s difficult to remember, etc.

If you are used to the name it’s fine, however when you are around people not familiar with the site it’s gets real tiring explaining it.

That got us discussing changing the domain name or other things and inspiring this post.

How To Change Your Domain Name

To technically change your domain name and have all the old visitors show up at your new site you can use a 301 permanent redirect.

When done properly your visitors and subscribers will probably not notice a difference.

If your blog is small it’s really quite easy.

Practice Your 301 First

If you are doing the 301 redirects yourself you might want to spend $8 for a domain and practice redirecting a blog their first just to get your feet wet instead of playing with your moneymaker.

Change Your Social Profiles?

If it was as simple as changing your domain name with a 301 redirect I would probably change the 45n5 domain name to something more brandable and that contains human words, however it’s not that easy.

Social sites like twitter.com/45n5 and youtube.com/45n5 can’t be redirected.

I’m not sure what to do with social profiles when you change your online presence. Do you?

Sell Your Site And Start Fresh?

Another thought is to just sellout and take the money to help start your new blog from scratch.

This would give the new owner your domain, social profiles, wouldn’t chance screwing up your pagerank, etc.

However you lose everything, including most of your readers.

I’d consider this option but it would take some serious convincing from the wife which makes me think of transfering the site.
